Hariyali Teej is one of the most prominent festivals of the month of Sawan. There is confusion among women about which day this festival will be celebrated in 2026, because some people believe that Hariyali Teej will be celebrated on 14th August, while some people think that this festival will be celebrated on 15th August.
Also known as Sawan Teej or Chhoti Teej, this festival is deeply associated with Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. On this day, women wear green clothes, apply henna and participate in worship, while many women also observe fast. This festival is not only about customs but also about celebrating the beauty of monsoon and the bond of love and devotion associated with Shiva and Parvati.
Hariyali Teej 2026 date
Hariyali Teej will be celebrated on Saturday, August 15, 2026. It falls on the third day of Shukla Paksha of Shravan month. Tritiya Tithi will start at 6:46 pm on 14th August and end at 5:28 pm on 15th August. Since Tritiya Tithi is on 15th August, fasts and festivals will be celebrated on this day.
Why is Hariyali Teej celebrated?
This festival is dedicated to the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. According to Hindu belief, Goddess Parvati performed severe penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband. His devotion ultimately united both of them. Therefore, Hariyali Teej holds special significance for married women, who pray for marital happiness and the welfare of their family. Unmarried women can also observe the fast while praying for a suitable life partner.
Green celebration of Sawan
The word Hariyali is related to greenery, which shows the deep connection between this festival and the monsoon season. Women traditionally wear green sarees or suits and complete their look with bangles, mehendi and traditional jewellery. Decorated swings are also an important part of Teej celebrations. Women gather together to enjoy swings and sing traditional Sawan songs.
Puja time for Hariyali Teej
The puja can be done after sunrise and during the auspicious time of Tritiya Tithi. Generally, the time from sunrise to around 9:08 in the morning and from 12:17 to 1:08 in the afternoon is considered as Abhijeet Muhurta. Evening Pradosh Muhurta is from 6:38 to 8:51 pm. Since the Muhurta may vary according to location, devotees should check their local Panchang before starting the puja.
Hariyali Teej Puja and Fast Rituals
On this day devotees worship Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha. Idols, flowers, fruits, belpatra, sandalwood paste, lamp, incense sticks and traditional items of adornment are included in the puja. Women offer bangles, vermilion, mehendi and other jewelery to Goddess Parvati. Many women observe a strict fast on this day, while others make some changes in the fast as per their family customs. Sindhara is another important custom in which married daughters receive gifts from their maternal home. These gifts may include clothes, bangles, mehendi, sweets and other festive items.
What dishes are prepared on the day of Teej?
The celebration of Teej is incomplete without traditional home-made dishes. Ghevar is one of the most popular sweets associated with this festival and is often eaten with rabri or other sweet dishes. Apart from this, Malpua is also made at home. These dishes are often prepared especially for the occasion and served in the festivities that follow the puja. In many families, sweets and food items are also exchanged with relatives and neighbours.
