HBO has released the second official teaser for its upcoming Harry Potter television series, giving fans a closer look at the ground-up reboot of J.K. Rowling’s beloved wizarding world.
The eight-episode first season will adapt Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, known as Sorcerer’s Stone in the US, and will introduce a new generation of actors to roles made famous by the original film franchise.
Newcomer Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry Potter, with Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.
Harry, Ron and Hermione head to Hogwarts
The new footage previews several familiar moments from Harry’s first year at Hogwarts.
The teaser shows Harry, Ron and Hermione arriving at the wizarding school and being sorted into Gryffindor. It also offers glimpses of their early classes and encounters with some of Hogwarts’ most recognisable teachers and staff.
Among the characters featured are Albus Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall, Severus Snape and Rubeus Hagrid.
Fans also get brief looks at herbology and potions classes, as well as Harry’s introduction to Quidditch.
Iconic Philosopher’s Stone moments teased
Beyond Harry’s first experiences at Hogwarts, the teaser hints at several major set pieces from the first book.
The footage includes glimpses of the mystery surrounding the Philosopher’s Stone, the troll encounter inside Hogwarts and the wizard’s chess sequence.
The Invisibility Cloak and the Mirror of Erised also make appearances, suggesting that the series will closely revisit many of the details from Rowling’s original story.
With the television format offering significantly more screen time than a feature film, the reboot is expected to have greater room to explore the source material.
HBO plans seven-season Harry Potter adaptation
The new series is being developed as a long-term adaptation of all seven Harry Potter novels, with each planned season based on one book.
The approach differs from the original film franchise, which adapted the seven novels across eight films released between 2001 and 2011.
HBO has already renewed the series for a second season, which will be based on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
The early renewal signals the network’s commitment to rebuilding the franchise for television and continuing the story beyond Harry’s first year at Hogwarts.
Meet the new Harry Potter cast
Alongside the three young leads, the series features an experienced adult cast.
John Lithgow plays Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer stars as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu portrays Severus Snape and Nick Frost plays Rubeus Hagrid.
The cast also includes Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge and Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy.
Lox Pratt plays Draco Malfoy, while Rory Wilmot takes on the role of Neville Longbottom. Several of the younger performers are making their major screen debuts with the series.
When does the Harry Potter HBO series premiere?
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone will premiere on December 25 on HBO and will also be available to stream on HBO Max.
