Tabassum was born in Mumbai on July 9, 1944. Her father, Ayodhyanath Sachdev, was a freedom fighter, and her mother, Ajgari Begum, was named Tabassum by her father, and Kiran Bala by her mother. However, during the Partition era, the combination of a Hindu and Muslim name was so distasteful to fundamentalists that her family received death threats. 
He faced the camera at the age of just 3 years.
