“He was a huge miss”: Ruturaj Gaikwad stays non-committal on MS Dhoni’s future
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were officially eliminated from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season on Thursday. Former IPL winners lost to the Gujarat Titans (GT) by 89 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Gujarat. Ruturaj Gaikwad had earlier won the toss. He opted to bowl first, but saw the home team post a massive total of 229 on the board.
Questions about the plans of MS Dhoni have been floating since the last home of the season on Monday. During the post-game interaction, Gaikwad was asked if Dhoni will play the IPL 2027 season, to which he said, “We all will get to know that next year. He was a huge miss for us. He comes in the final few overs and changes the game. Never know what happens next year.”
Put into bat, Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan gave the team a great start with the bat, adding 125 runs for the opening wicket in 74 balls. Gill was out for 64 off 37 balls and during the course of his knock went past the 6000 run mark in T20 cricket, also 200 sixes in the format.
Sudharsan scored 84 off 53 balls with seven boundaries and four sixes; this was his fifth successive fifty in the IPL. Before this, only Virender Sehwag, David Warner, and Jos Buttler achieved the feat. Buttler then gave the innings a great finish with 57 off just 27 balls with five boundaries and four sixes.
Gujarat bowlers run riot against hapless Chennai
Sanju Samson was out for a golden duck, dismissed by Siraj during the chase. Siraj then got the key wicket of Ruturaj for 16 and Urvil Patel for a duck. Kartik Sharma and Matt Short then added 22 runs for the fourth wicket before Rabada dismissed Short for 24.
Kartik was out for 19, thanks to Shubman and his bullet arm throw that caught the player short of his crease. Shivam Dubey tried to fight back with his knock of 47 that came off 17 balls, but Rashid Khan ended the innings with Gill taking a splendid catch. In the end, Rabada finished the innings with two quick wickets as he, along with Siraj and Rashid, finished with three wickets each.
