Heavy to very heavy rain forecast across the country, IMD issues alert for Delhi, West Bengal and Northeast

New Delhi, 8 July. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted widespread and heavy rainfall in many parts of the country in the next few days. Due to active Southwest Monsoon, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Northwest, Central, West Coast and Northeast India.

According to IMD, heavy rain is possible in the following areas on Wednesday:

  • Very heavy rain: Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.
  • Heavy to very heavy rain: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam-Meghalaya, Coastal Karnataka, East Rajasthan, Gujarat, Konkan-Goa, Central Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and South Interior Karnataka.
  • Heavy rain: Bihar, Haryana, Chandigarh-Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh, Kerala, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram-Tripura, North Interior Karnataka, Punjab, Saurashtra-Kutch, Uttarakhand, Vidarbha, West Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh.

Heavy rains are also likely to continue over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam-Meghalaya, Bihar, East Uttar Pradesh, Himachal, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, East Rajasthan and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal-Sikkim in the coming days. There may also be extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places on the west coast. Along with this, an alert has also been issued for thunderstorm, lightning and strong winds at the speed of 40-60 km/hour in Peninsular, Central and North-Eastern India.

The IMD said the monsoon has advanced into the rest of Gujarat, additional areas of Rajasthan and Haryana. Conditions are favorable for its further progress in the remaining parts of North-West India also.

Heavy rains are affecting life in many states. A large portion of NH-48 collapsed in Narsinghpur area in Gurugram, Haryana. Traffic was disrupted due to debris falling on Yamunotri National Highway (NH-134) in Uttarakhand, although clean-up work has been started.
