Argentina dashed co-hosts Netherlands' dream of winning the Women's Hockey World Cup 2026 for the fourth time in a row. In a thrilling final on Saturday 29 August, Argentina beat the Netherlands 3-1 in a penalty shootout to win the Women's Hockey World Cup. Argentina showed composure in the shootout and won the World Cup for the third time.

Argentina won the Women's World Cup 2026 title
Argentina's women's hockey team previously won the title in 2002 and 2010, defeating the Netherlands. In the final, played at Wagner Stadium, Victoria Granato, Brisa Brugesser and Sofia Cairo scored for Argentina in a penalty shootout, while Díaz Jo's goal was disallowed. Win Marin scored for the Netherlands, while Piene Saunders, Felice Albers and Moise Freke missed chances.
In the first 15 minutes, both teams fought hard, but neither team could score a goal. The Netherlands got their first penalty corner in the last minute of the second quarter. Ybi Janssen, who is considered to be the number one drag-flicker in the world, hit a great drag-flick and put the ball into the goal post. It was her eighth goal of the tournament, giving the Netherlands a 1–0 lead.

After the break, Argentina kept up the pressure with a number of penalty corners, but Dutch goalkeeper Anne Veenendaal made an excellent save to prevent Argentina from equalizing. Argentina continued to attack and finally got the breakthrough in the 54th minute of the match. The Dutch goalkeeper slipped trying to block Gorzelani's flick and captain Maria Granato, who was standing near the goal, scored on the rebound. The score was 1-1.

Pressure on the Dutch players in the shootout
Both teams then tried to take a decisive lead, but neither could score. The match went to a shootout, where the Argentine players fared better. Only Vine Marin from the Netherlands succeeded. Then the goals scored by Argentina and the missed attempts by the Dutch players completely changed the picture of the match. In the end, Argentina won the shootout 3-1 to lift the World Cup trophy for the third time.
