How did Nihangs capture Nagarasu Gurudwara? Ruckus broke out in Uttarakhand
An attempt has been made by Nihangs to forcibly take over two Gurudwaras in Rudraprayag and Karnaprayag area of Uttarakhand, where they vandalized and held a 65-year-old man hostage. This whole controversy started after the fencing incident that took place in Karnaprayag on June 16, where the police arrested four Nihangs. Angered by this, the Nihangs entered the Gurudwaras of Nagarasu and Rudraprayag, abused and threw stones from the roof. To calm the situation, the administration has shut down internet in the affected areas and has imposed Section 163 till June 27 for security.
This whole matter started in Karnaprayag on Tuesday, June 16. There was an argument between the Nihang passengers and the local people over some issue. The matter escalated so much that the Nihangs took out swords and engaged in sword fighting. After this incident, the police took action and registered a case against four Nihangs and arrested them. Some people of the Sikh community became angry with this arrest and their anger started becoming visible on social media. He said that the police only caught the Nihangs and did not take any action against the other party i.e. the local people. Due to this resentment, the Sikh community had announced a big protest and demonstration in Karnaprayag on Sunday.

What commotion happened?
On Saturday, some Nihangs suddenly reached the Gurudwara located in Nagarasu area of Garhwal. Gurudwara manager Behant Singh said that as soon as these people arrived, they started abusing and assaulting the servants. They forcibly entered the Gurudwara and started vandalizing it. After this, about 7 to 8 Nihangs climbed onto the top floor of the Gurudwara i.e. the roof and stood there. These Nihangs had already collected many stones and other items on the roof. They started throwing stones down from the roof. This stone pelting caused a lot of damage to the property of the Gurudwara and spread fear among the devotees and travelers visiting there.
police effort
The Nihangs occupying the terrace demanded that the police immediately release their arrested comrades without any conditions. To get his point across, he captured two people. A 65-year-old man was also included among these hostages. Later, the Nihangs left one person but it became a big challenge for the police to take out the other elderly person safely without using any force and bring the situation back to normal. Seeing the situation worsening, police and ITBP personnel surrounded the entire Gurudwara from all sides and the entire area became a cantonment. Superintendent of Police Niharika Tomar herself spoke to the Nihangs on phone for about an hour and tried to convince them but no solution could be found and the Nihangs remained adamant on their insistence.
A similar incident like Nagarasu also happened in another Gurudwara of Rudraprayag. There also some Nihangs forcibly entered inside the Gurudwara. They beat and abused the servants working there. They wanted to take over the entire administration of the Gurudwara and were trying to take it over by force. Due to both these incidents, an atmosphere of high tension was created on the entire yatra route.
internet down
To prevent the atmosphere from worsening and to prevent rumors from spreading, the district administration shut down internet services in Nagarasu area on Saturday evening itself. This internet remained closed for about 12 hours and was restarted at around 5.20 pm on Sunday evening. On the other hand, in view of the announcement of protest by the Sikh community in Karnprayag, internet services were completely closed throughout the day on Sunday in many sensitive areas like Karnprayag, Gauchar and Simli. However, amidst this huge commotion and tension, one good thing was that the holy pilgrimage of Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib continued continuously throughout the day without any interruption.
