While buying things like silver jewellery, coins or utensils, you must have seen numbers like 925, 999 or 800. In such a situation, the question arises that what is the meaning of these numbers and how is the real purity of silver known?
How is the purity of silver measured?
According to experts, the scale for measuring the purity of silver is completely different from checking the purity of gold. The purity of silver is usually measured not in carats but in fineness number or hallmark. If you understand in simple words, if 925 is written on any silver utensil or jewellery, it means that it contains 925 parts out of 1000 i.e. about 92.5 percent silver. Apart from this, other metals are added to the remaining part of silver to strengthen it. At the same time, if 999 is written in silver, it means that it contains about 99.9 percent silver.
You can measure the purity of silver at home also
You only need to know a few numbers to measure the purity of silver. With this you can check the purity of silver at home also. Generally 999 is the fineness number so it means it contains 99.9% silver. 990 contains approximately 99.0% silver. 970 contains approximately 97.0% silver. At the same time, 958 contains about 95.8% silver. 925 contains approximately 92.5% silver.
Apart from this, if the fineness number is 835 then it means that it contains approximately 83.5% silver. At the same time, in silver with fineness number 800, you get about 80% silver. Hallmarking of silver has been made mandatory in India by the Bureau of Indian Standards.
