Rahane was captaining the Kolkata Knight Riders until IPL 2026, but now he will not be seen playing in the IPL either. The most memorable moment of Rahane’s career is the 2020-21 Border Gavaskar Trophy, when he was suddenly appointed captain mid-series due to Virat Kohli’s injury.

Rahane, who has played 85 Test matches, is eligible to receive ₹70,000 per month under the BCCI’s revised pension scheme.
In 2022, the BCCI revised its pension plan for former cricketers. This increased the pension amount for players who played cricket for India for a long time. Ajinkya Rahane has played 85 Test matches for India, making him eligible for the BCCI’s highest-tier pension system. Previously, players in this category received a pension of ₹50,000 per month, which has now been revised to ₹70,000 per month.
During whose tenure was the decision taken?
The BCCI’s decision to increase the pension amount was made when Sourav Ganguly was the board’s president. The purpose of this decision was to provide financial assistance to former players and others associated with cricket. Ganguly had said at the time, “It is extremely important to take care of the financial situation of our former cricketers. Players are our lifeline and as a board, it is our duty to stand by them after their playing days are over. Umpires have been unsung heroes and the BCCI greatly values their contribution.”
When can pension be stopped?
According to the BCCI’s pension system, if a former player is appointed to an official position within the board, his pension may be temporarily suspended. If Rahane is appointed as an administrator, coach, or any other paid position within the BCCI in the future, he will receive a salary commensurate with that role, and his pension payments may be affected according to the rules.
Ajinkya Rahane has contributed to the Indian team in all three formats. He has played 85 Tests, 90 ODIs, and 20 T20 Internationals in his career. Following his retirement, Rahane has not yet made any official announcement regarding his future plans.
