Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 features 33 Operators at launch, giving players plenty of characters to choose from in Multiplayer and DMZ. Some Operators are available immediately, while others require campaign progress, multiplayer challenges, DMZ levels, or special editions of the game.
If you want to unlock every available Operator, knowing which mode to play can save you time. Here is how the unlock system works and what you need to do to expand your collection.
How Operator Unlocks Work in Modern Warfare 4
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 divides Operator unlocks across several progression systems. You can earn characters by completing campaign missions, reaching specific DMZ levels, and finishing Multiplayer challenges. Premium Operators are also included with certain purchases.
To view your available characters, open Multiplayer and enter Create-a-Class. Select the Operator field at the top of your chosen loadout. This menu lets you select unlocked characters and check your collection.
1. Operators Available Immediately
Five Operators are available without completing additional challenges:
- Min-Hee
- CTSFO
- Mil-Sim KSK Arctic
- UCTF
- Army SF Airborne
These characters are part of the South Korean Quick Reaction Force. You can select them immediately and start playing without spending time on progression objectives.
2. How to Unlock Campaign Operators
The campaign offers eight Operators through mission completion. You do not need to finish the entire story to unlock each character. Complete the corresponding mission to earn its associated Operator.
| Operator | Unlock requirement |
|---|---|
| Give | Complete Mayhem |
| dallas | Complete Hired Gun |
| Luca | Complete Traffic |
| Oh Ji | Complete Assassins |
| Kal | Complete Defection |
| Dunn | Complete Counter Attack |
| West | Complete Losing Ground |
| Park | Complete Decapitation |
If you want these characters quickly, focus on completing the listed missions. You can follow the campaign naturally rather than grinding Multiplayer matches for the same rewards.
3. Unlock Operators Through Multiplayer Challenges
Five Operators require specific combat achievements in Multiplayer. These challenges reward players for developing different fighting skills.
- Blackwell: Get three Operator kills without dying, ten times.
- Jae: Get 50 Operator hipfire kills.
- Giant: Get 15 Operator double kills or better.
- Valen: Get 20 Operator longshot kills.
- Winter: Get 50 Operator headshot kills.
For Blackwell, focus on surviving between eliminations instead of chasing unnecessary fights. For Jae, use close-range weapons and fire without aiming down sights. Shotguns and suitable submachine guns can help.
For Velikan, choose busy objective modes where opponents frequently gather. For Valen, use a weapon suited to long-range engagements, while Zimo is easier to pursue with accurate weapons and controlled bursts.
4. Unlock Operators in DMZ
DMZ has four Operators tied to player progression. You must reach the following levels:
- Reece: Reach DMZ Player Level 4.
- Coffey: Reach DMZ Player Level 9.
- Simone: Reach DMZ Player Level 15.
- Hector: Reach DMZ Player Level 19.
Complete contracts, gather useful loot, and extract successfully to progress through DMZ. Avoid unnecessary fights when carrying valuable items, as surviving a deployment helps you maintain your progress.
5. Operators Included With Special Editions
Some characters are tied to purchase bonuses rather than ordinary gameplay challenges.
Preordering the digital Standard Edition or Vault Edition unlocks Hunter Killer at launch.
The Vault Edition includes two Operator packs:
- Hostile Alliance: Price, Valeria, Ghost, and Blix.
- Special Forces: COM FST, KSK Amphibious, South Korean Special Forces, and SAS.
These packs become available at launch on October 23, 2026. If you already own the Standard Edition, check the official edition details before purchasing an upgrade.
Kyle is associated with the Call of Duty Endowment Valor Pack. Ju Kwon’s unlock requirement is classified in the published Operator list, so a confirmed gameplay method is not currently available.
