Sonam Wangchuk will not shift to private hospital, High Court rejects wife Gitanjali’s petition, says- trust doctors
Educationist Sonam Wangchuk, who was on hunger strike for 20 days demanding the resignation of the Education Minister, was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital by Delhi Police on Saturday. His wife had filed a petition in the court to shift him from a government hospital to a private hospital. Rejecting this, the court has said that at present he will not be shifted to a private hospital. The court said that if the government decided to take him to the hospital after his health deteriorated, then this action cannot be called arbitrary. Let us tell you, Wangchuk’s wife Geetanjali had filed a petition in the Delhi High Court saying that she did not trust Safdarjung Hospital, hence Wangchuk should be admitted to a private hospital.
Sibal said – Wangchuk was not allowed to meet lawyers or doctors.
During the hearing, senior lawyer Kapil Sibal said, “He was taken to Safdarjung Hospital. He was not allowed to meet doctors and lawyers. We do not know what medicines were given to him. Neither has he been kept in custody nor is he accused of any crime. We demand his leave. They say that the potassium level came down. It was 3.6 instead of 2.9, but I want to go to the hospital of my choice.”
Government cited Wangchuk’s health
ASG Chetan Sharma said, “Wangchuk’s health was continuously deteriorating. He was on hunger strike for 18 days during this season. Prolonged fasting leads to a condition called ‘ketosis’ in the body. It is not necessary that every time it is immediately visible in the test, but it can cause shock to the body. If the level of potassium in the body decreases, then there can be problems. The functioning of the kidneys will be affected.”
Court said – considering health, taking to hospital is not arbitrary
The court said, “Considering his health, the government has decided to shift him to the hospital, hence this step does not seem arbitrary. The doctors are closely monitoring his health and have given him some things orally only with his consent, hence it cannot be said that he was forced. He did not decide to be admitted to the hospital on his own free will, the government had the right to take such a step.”
How is Wangchuk’s health?
Safdarjung Hospital released Wangchuk’s health update and said that he is being given necessary medical help. Currently his health parameters are stable, but there is a slight change in the blood parameters. According to the statement, Wangchuk is fully conscious. His blood pressure, pulse and oxygen saturation are within normal limits. However, symptoms of dehydration are visible in his body. Doctors say that it is extremely important that he is kept under medical supervision.
