Hyundai to Invest Additional Rs 4,000 Crore in Pune Plant, Targets 3.2 Lakh Vehicles Annually

Hyundai Motor India plans to invest an additional Rs 4,000 crore in Maharashtra by 2030 to expand production at its newly inaugurated Pune manufacturing plant. The company aims to increase the facility’s annual production capacity from 1.7 lakh vehicles to 3.2 lakh units, strengthening its manufacturing footprint and supporting its long-term growth strategy in India.

The announcement was made by Hyundai Motor India Managing Director and CEO Tarun Garg during the inauguration of the Talegaon facility on October 14, 2026.

Pune Plant Capacity to Nearly Double by 2030

Hyundai’s Talegaon plant currently has an annual production capacity of 1.7 lakh vehicles. The company plans to increase this capacity in phases to 3.2 lakh units by 2030.

Hyundai has already invested Rs 7,000 crore in Maharashtra, while its supplier partners have invested an additional Rs 4,600 crore in the state.

The expansion is expected to strengthen the Pune facility’s role in Hyundai’s Indian manufacturing network and create opportunities across the automotive supply chain.

The plant currently manufactures the Hyundai Venue, with production supporting both domestic demand and exports. The facility is designed to accommodate multiple vehicle models as production requirements evolve.

Hyundai Targets Greater Localisation

The company also plans to increase localisation in its manufacturing operations from 83% to 92%.

Higher localisation would allow Hyundai to source a larger proportion of components from Indian suppliers, potentially reducing dependence on imported parts and strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities.

Maharashtra’s established automotive ecosystem is expected to support this objective. Hyundai said 55 supplier partners have invested in the state, with nearly half of its sourcing network located within a 50-kilometre radius of the Pune plant.

The wider supplier ecosystem, including smaller vendors, has generated more than 18,000 employment opportunities in Maharashtra, according to the company.

Investment Supports Hyundai’s Wider India Strategy

The additional Rs 4,000 crore investment forms part of Hyundai Motor Group’s broader commitment to invest $15.5 billion in India between 2026 and 2032.

The group plans to direct investments towards manufacturing expansion, research and development, localisation, electrification and emerging mobility technologies.

Hyundai Motor India has also outlined plans to introduce 26 new models as it seeks to strengthen its position in the domestic passenger vehicle market.

The company is investing in electric vehicles and charging infrastructure, with plans to offer four electric vehicles by 2029. It is also pursuing hybrid technology, aiming for sustainable powertrains to account for 50% of its portfolio by 2030.

Can Hyundai Regain Its Position in India’s Car Market?

Hyundai was previously India’s second-largest passenger vehicle manufacturer but has slipped to fourth place amid stronger competition from Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra.

Hyundai Motor Company President and CEO José Muñoz said the Pune plant’s expansion would help the company increase production and support its ambition to regain the second position by 2028-29.

Higher manufacturing capacity will be important for meeting demand, but the company’s performance will also depend on product competitiveness, pricing, new launches and consumer preferences.

Summary

Hyundai Motor India plans to invest an additional Rs 4,000 crore in Maharashtra by 2030, expanding its Pune plant’s annual capacity from 1.7 lakh to 3.2 lakh vehicles. The company has already invested Rs 7,000 crore in the state, while suppliers have invested Rs 4,600 crore. Hyundai also aims to increase localisation from 83% to 92% and strengthen its position in India’s passenger vehicle market.
