Is there anyone who doesn’t love a good chocolate biscuit? Perfect as an afternoon pick-me-up or dipped in a cup of tea, they are comforting and delicious. However, more and more of us are being put off buying store-bought biscuits because of concerns over ultra-processed foods and the impact they are having on our health.
Fortunately, you can make your own chocolate biscuits at home that taste every bit as good as those you can buy from big name brands in your local supermarket. My version only takes around 20 minutes from start to finish, takes just six ingredients (with two more as optional additions) and works out at a cost of just 9p a biscuit.
These homemade oaty chocolate biscuits are probably most comparable to McVitie’s Chocolate Hobnobs, which, delicious as they are, work out at around 16p a biscuit, contain far more ingredients and can reasonably be described as ultra-processed. I’m not a regular biscuit baker so I was taken aback by just how simple these homemade biscuits were to make — and more importantly how good they tasted. My kids loved them too, which is always the tougher test.
These biscuits couldn’t be simpler to make. All you need are a mixing bowl, spoon, weighing scale and a baking tray lined with a sheet of baking paper.
Method
1. Mix all the dry ingredients in a bowl
2. Melt the butter then add it to the mixture along with the honey, if using
3. Divide into 12(ish) balls
4. Lay on a baking sheet and flatten
5. Bake at 180C for 12-15 minutes
6. Leave to cool completely
7. Melt the chocolate then top the biscuits with the chocolate
8. Put in the fridge to set.
