Living in London, life can occasionally feel quite hectic. While I love city living, I do try to get away at least a few times each year to truly relax. One of my favourite spots is a place famous for its laid-back vibe and wonderful high street.
Totnes is a market town in Devon, known for its creative community and thriving bohemian culture. It also has, in my opinion, one of the best high streets in Britain. Starting at the bottom of the street, you can cross the bridge over the River Dart and really soak up the town’s atmosphere from there. In summer, the town is decorated with colourful bunting, while small boats glide across the water.
There’s lush riverside greenery, and the town is full of life. After crossing the bridge, nip into The Curator for a coffee — the first of many independent businesses dotted along the high street.
The coffee is superb, and they serve a lovely selection of pastries if you fancy sitting down for a bite, though don’t fill up too much, there’s plenty more to explore.
The high street rises gently upwards and is lined with hundreds of independent shops, charity outlets and tearooms.
Further up the high street, you’ll discover the Cornish Bakery, which fills the street with the mouthwatering savoury aroma of pasties. They accommodate all preferences and even my vegan brother found something he loved.
As the high street bends round to the left, you’ll find Butterworth’s Vintage Co, a small but remarkable second-hand establishment offering everything from knitwear to workwear and vintage magazines.
After you’ve had a thorough rummage through the shelves, you might fancy a quick pint or perhaps another meal.
You’re in luck. Just a brief walk from Butterworth’s lies The Bull Inn, a splendid pub featuring an extensive organic food menu alongside nine rooms on offer should you require somewhere to lay your head.
The standout feature of The Bull Inn for me is its charming garden, where you can relax in the sunshine and observe the world go by. Located just across the car park, and much like the remainder of the town, it’s regularly decorated with beautiful bunting.
On a bright day, it truly is difficult to surpass. And if you’re anything like me, you’ll be more than prepared to rest your feet after all that shopping along the high street.
