New format of ODI World Cup
South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia will jointly host the ODI World Cup 2027. A total of 14 teams will participate in this tournament. The format will be like this in this tournament…
- round 1: Under the new format, the three lowest ranked teams will play the first round-robin super series round. Only one team from this round will reach the group stage, while the remaining two teams will be out of the tournament.
- Round-2 (30 matches): After this, 12 teams will play in the next round, which will be divided into 2 groups of 6 teams each. After this, both the groups will play in round-robin format, the top-3 teams will advance to the next round. Apart from this, the best performing 1 team from the fourth placed teams in both the groups will also advance. In this way, a total of 7 teams will enter the Super-7 round.
- Round-3 (21 matches): In the Super-7 round, all 7 teams will face each other in round-robin format. The top-4 teams of this round will qualify for the semi-finals.
- The first-placed team will face the fourth-placed team, while the second- and third-placed teams will face each other in the second semi-final. The final will be played between the winning teams of these two semi-finals.
When and where will the World Cup be played?
ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027 will start from 4 October 2027. The final match of this mega tournament will be played on 27 November 2027. This World Cup will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Let us tell you that in this tournament the Australian team will enter as the defending champion. Format of T20 World Cup also changed
The format of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028 has also been changed. Only 20 teams will participate in this tournament, which will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. The format of this tournament has been changed, so that the number of teams can be increased in the second round.
- Group Stage (30 matches): The 20 teams participating in the tournament will be divided into groups of 4-4. Out of these, the top-2 teams in all the groups will go to the Super-10 round. Let us tell you that in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, 4 groups of 5 teams each were formed.
- Super 10 (20 matches): In this round, there will be two groups of 5 teams each, in which matches will be played in round-robin format. The teams at the top of both the groups will directly qualify for the semi-finals.
- Eliminator (2 matches): The remaining two semi-final spots will be decided through a new eliminator round. In this, the second placed teams of both the Super-10 groups will face the third placed teams of the opposite group.
The winners of those eliminator rounds will make it to the semi-finals, while the semi-finals and final will be played as per the existing format.
