IED and electronic detonator recovered in Amritsar, plot to target police foiled

In Amritsar, Punjab, rural police took major action and foiled an alleged terrorist plot to target a police establishment. Police have recovered an improvised explosive device (IED), electronic detonator, battery, timer and iron box weighing 690 grams. This item was kept in a packet wrapped in wax.

Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said on Sunday that the recovery was made on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. The recovered explosive material was handled as per prescribed safety protocols and defused by the bomb disposal squad.

The DGP said that Amritsar Rural Police has averted a potential threat to public safety by foiling the conspiracy of anti-national elements. He said that the matter is being further investigated and efforts are on to identify and arrest the people behind the conspiracy.

Amritsar Rural Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal said that as part of security arrangements, checking points had already been increased and surveillance of government establishments had also been tightened.

He told that on the night of 15-16 August, Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Kulbir Singh was patrolling at night. Meanwhile, they found a suspicious packet wrapped in black wax lying in the jurisdiction of Gaggomahal police post.

On examining the packet, electronic detonator, battery, timer and iron box were found along with suspected IED.

SSP said that as soon as the information was received, the bomb disposal squad was called to the spot. The squad safely destroyed the explosive material on the spot, while the other items were taken into custody by the police.

In this case, an FIR has been registered on August 16 at Ramdas police station in Amritsar Rural under sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act. The police is trying to find out the people behind the conspiracy.
