New Delhi. Before the start of the Test series between India and Sri Lanka, Shubman Gill’s injury has raised new concerns for Team India. Gill, besides being the captain of the Indian Test team, plays a crucial role in the batting order. Therefore, if he is unable to regain full fitness for the first Test starting on August 15th, the Indian team may have to make a major decision not only regarding the captaincy but also regarding the number four batting position.
Shubman Gill injured his right ring finger during practice. This is why he didn’t take the field on the first day of the practice match between India and Sri Lanka XI. The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s medical team is monitoring his injury. At present, it’s unclear how serious his injury is and whether he will be able to participate in the practice match. However, if he is fit before the first Test, it would be a relief for Team India. However, if he doesn’t, filling his number four spot will be difficult.
In such a situation, Ravindra Jadeja could be one of the most experienced options. While Jadeja isn’t a pure number four batsman, his experience and batting ability in Test cricket make him a strong contender for the role. Jadeja’s batting, especially against spin, could prove useful to the team. He has batted higher up the order before, and sending him at number four for a Test could be a viable option. Furthermore, his presence provides the team with additional bowling options.
Another name is Dhruv Jurel. Wicketkeeper-batsman Jurel has demonstrated his ability to bat in difficult conditions in Test cricket so far. He has batted from number four to number six, and his Test statistics indicate that he is not only a backup wicketkeeper but also a useful batsman. If the team management decides to play an additional batsman alongside Rishabh Pant, Jurel could be given a chance at number four. Gill’s absence could also provide a major opportunity for him to prove himself.
The third, and perhaps most obvious, option could be Devdutt Padikkal. Padikkal is with the team as a specialist batsman and has experience batting at number four. Padikkal, who has consistently performed in domestic cricket, is considered a technically sound batsman. If the team management chooses to replace Gill directly with a specialist batsman, Padikkal could be a candidate. While this would increase the number of left-handed batsmen in the Indian batting order, it wouldn’t be considered a major problem for a single Test.
The biggest question right now is Shubman Gill’s fitness. Only after the BCCI medical team’s report will it be clear whether he will be able to take the field in the first Test against Sri Lanka. If Gill is not fit, Team India has three distinct options: Jadeja’s experience, Jurel’s youthful potential, and Padikkal’s specialist batting. The team management will now have to decide whether to prioritize experience, trust a young player, or assign the number four position to a specialist batsman.
