‘If someone is in pain, it is our responsibility to listen’: CJI’s emotional statement on the woman who removed the mangalsutra in the court
An incident took place in the Supreme Court on Monday (July 13) which not only shocked the people present there, but also attracted the attention of the entire country. During the hearing in front of the bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, a woman from Hyderabad removed her mangalsutra and requested the court to give priority to her case. This incident has once again brought the sensitivity of the judiciary under discussion. Now a reaction has come from the CJI himself on this entire incident.
‘It is our duty to listen to every complainant’
While talking on this sensitive issue on Tuesday (July 14), CJI Surya Kant clearly said that if a person comes before the court with his pain or suffering, then it is the responsibility of the court to listen to him. He stressed that the court respects every individual. While making his point, the CJI also added that it is our duty to respect all the constitutional institutions, but at the same time he also advised that no one should misuse the opportunity given by their conduct.
What was the whole matter?
On Monday, when the CJI bench was hearing another case, suddenly the woman who had come from Hyderabad stood in the courtroom and started insisting for the hearing of her case. The matter was pending before a special bench, for which a hearing was fixed for next Monday. The woman’s frustration was so much that she took off her mangalsutra in front of the court. The CJI patiently explained to her that her case would be heard by a special bench and she did not need to come to Delhi again, she could present her views through online medium also.
Woman’s insistence, CJI’s advice
CJI Surya Kant repeatedly advised the woman that she does not need to take the trouble of coming to the court, she can participate in the hearing by connecting online from home. However, the woman remained adamant and refused to join online. She said that she wants to present herself in the court and present her side. Understanding his situation, the court appealed to maintain dignity, so that there is no hindrance in the justice process.
