Kanpur: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur's Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology is going to get major financial support. Rakesh Gangwal, a distinguished alumnus of the institute and co-founder of Indigo, has announced an additional ₹300 crore for the development of the school.
Rakesh Gangwal has earlier contributed ₹100 crore to IIT Kanpur in 2022. That cooperation helped advance the plan to establish a medical school at the institute. After the new contribution, Rakesh Gangwal's total contribution to Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology will reach ₹400 crore.
What is the matching grant of Rs 300 crore?
Under the new announcement, Rakesh Gangwal will contribute an amount equal to the contribution from other partners up to a maximum of ₹300 crore for the development of the school. The objective of this initiative is to inspire other alumni, philanthropists and well-wishers to support IIT Kanpur for its expansion in the field of medical education, research, clinical innovation and medtech.
That is, Rakesh Gangwal will also give the same amount as per the eligible contribution received from other associates for the school, the maximum limit of which has been fixed at ₹ 300 crore.
Plan to build a 500-bed super-specialty hospital
The development plan of Gangwal School includes the establishment of a 500-bed super-specialty hospital on the IIT Kanpur campus. Apart from this, there is also a plan for a proposed Cancer Care and Research Center with 200 beds.
The aim of these health facilities is to promote medical education, clinical research and better health services. Along with this, emphasis will also be laid on developing new solutions for future health challenges by bringing together doctors, researchers, engineers and technical experts.
Emphasis on bringing engineering and medical science together
Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology aims to combine medical sciences with the engineering, science and technology expertise of IIT Kanpur. The school will focus on advanced academic programs, multidisciplinary research, futuristic medicine and medtech innovation.
IIT Kanpur had decided to establish a medical school in 2021 to improve health services in Uttar Pradesh and advance the possibilities of research and innovation in the medical field with engineering-technology.

Director of IIT Kanpur, Prof. Manindra Aggarwal expressed his gratitude to Rakesh Gangwal for his cooperation. He said that the support of ₹100 crore received in 2022 had helped in making a start in the direction of the medical school. Now with the support of additional ₹ 300 crore, this goal of the institute will be able to progress more rapidly.
He described this collaboration as a proof of Rakesh Gangwal's trust and commitment towards IIT Kanpur.
Dean Prof. Anil K. Lalwani told historical contribution
Recently, Prof. was appointed Dean of Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology. Anil K. Lalwani described Rakesh Gangwal's contribution as historical. He said that this is an example of the fact that even one person can initiate big changes.
According to him, the school's vision of bringing together medicine, technology and innovation to serve society can have an impact beyond IIT Kanpur.

IIT Kanpur: Established in 1959
IIT Kanpur was established in 1959 and is recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India. The institute is known for its significant contribution in the field of science and engineering education as well as research and development.
The campus of IIT Kanpur is spread over 1,050 acres. The institute has 21 departments, three interdisciplinary programmes, 27 centers and three special schools. There are more than 590 full-time faculty and more than 9,500 students. The institute conducts academic and research activities in various fields including engineering, science, design, humanities and management.
