Monsoon has reactivated across the country and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, strong winds and lightning for many parts including North India. According to the IMD, weather conditions may remain challenging in many states on August 6.
According to the Meteorological Department, due to the influence of an active monsoon trough and upper-level cyclonic circulation, there is a possibility of widespread rainfall in many parts of North, East, Central and West India. Landslides are likely to occur, especially in the hilly areas, while waterlogging and disruption to traffic in the plains has been predicted. The administration and disaster management agencies have been advised to be on alert.
IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in 12 states including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Winds are likely to gust to 60 to 70 kmph in many areas, which may affect daily life.
The Meteorological Department has forecast an increase in the number of lightning strikes and strong winds along with the rain. Citizens have been advised to avoid open areas, under trees and near electricity poles.
Heavy rainfall is likely over eastern Uttar Pradesh, Seemanchal Pradesh in Bihar, hilly districts of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, Delhi-NCR, some parts of Punjab and several districts of West Bengal and Jharkhand. Waterlogging in low-lying areas and disruption to road traffic are likely in these areas.
Experts have said that continuous rains may cause water levels in rivers and reservoirs to rise. Citizens in hilly areas have been advised to take extra precautions due to the possibility of landslides and flash floods.
The national capital Delhi and its surrounding areas are likely to remain cloudy throughout the day. The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rain, thundershowers and strong winds. Winds may gust to 30 to 40 kmph in some areas. This may affect traffic and waterlogging in some areas.
Widespread rains are expected in western, central and eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh. Heavy rains and gusty winds are likely in several districts including Saharanpur, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor, Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Bahraich and Kushinagar. The administration has asked local authorities to remain alert and keep relief arrangements ready.
A warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for Seemanchal and North Bihar parts of Bihar. Heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning is likely in Kishanganj, Araria, Supaul, Purnia, Katihar, Darbhanga and Madhubani districts. Moderate to heavy rainfall and lightning are also likely in many districts of Jharkhand.
Thunderstorms are likely in eastern and northern parts of Rajasthan. Winds may gust to 50 to 60 kmph in some parts. Monsoon activity is also expected to continue in many districts of Madhya Pradesh.
