New Delhi: Marine One, the official helicopter carrying US President Donald Trump, came too close to a passenger plane over Washington on Tuesday. The incident occurred near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The incident has raised questions about US air traffic control and security.
How did the two planes come face to face?
According to the report, Trump’s helicopter departed from the Ellipse near the White House for Joint Base Andrews. About a minute later, an Envoy Air passenger plane took off from Reagan National Airport.

Shortly after, Marine One also headed towards the airport. During this time, the two aircraft came much closer than the prescribed safety distance. Officials initially described it as a “loss of separation” incident, meaning the two aircraft failed to maintain the required separation distance.
How much distance is necessary?
According to US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, aircraft in this area must maintain a horizontal distance of at least 1.5 miles and an altitude difference of 500 feet.
Although initial information suggests the two planes were not heading directly toward each other, they remained within the prescribed safety gap. Fortunately, there was no immediate danger to anyone on board the aircraft during the incident, and both aircraft reached their destinations safely.
Problems with radio communication
It is reported that Marine One’s pilots attempted to inform air traffic control of their flight minutes before takeoff, but due to radio communication problems, the message was not properly transmitted. The passenger plane was then cleared to take off, and the two planes briefly crossed paths.
Questions raised again after the 2025 plane crash
The FAA is investigating the incident, and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is also reviewing it. This incident is considered serious because in January 2025, a collision between a military helicopter and a passenger plane near the same airport resulted in the deaths of 67 people.
