In West Bengal, TMC leader was made to do sit-ups by garlanding him with shoes, shocking video surfaced from Bengal
Kolkata: An incident that came to light from Tarakeshwar area of Hooghly district of West Bengal has intensified the discussion in political circles. A case of protest by local people has come to light against senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and former chairman of Tarakeshwar Municipality Sapan Samant. Videos related to this incident are becoming increasingly viral on social media, although these videos have not been independently confirmed yet. According to local reports, some people protested publicly against Sapan Samant by accusing him of alleged corruption.
There have also been reports of humiliating treatment with them during the demonstration. It is being told that the protesters garlanded him with shoes, held his ears and made him do sit-ups and threw eggs and tomatoes at him. After the video of the incident surfaced, this matter quickly came into discussion. There were already reports of dissatisfaction in the area regarding the functioning of the municipality and some administrative decisions. It is being claimed that people protested due to this resentment.
Public accused of lack of transparency
The protesting people allege that complete transparency was not maintained in development works and administrative processes. However, these allegations have not yet been confirmed through any official investigation or report. The political atmosphere has become more heated after the incident. Opposition parties have targeted the state government and local administration on this issue. On the other hand, an official response on this matter is awaited from TMC. Political experts say that in a democratic system the public has every right to protest, but questions also arise when a person is treated disrespectfully in public.
Continuous protests against TMC leaders
After TMC suffered a setback in the West Bengal Assembly elections, incidents of public protest against many leaders have come to light. In recent times, reports of eggs being thrown at many TMC leaders and protests being held have been in the headlines. Prominent leaders of the party, Abhishek Banerjee and Kunal Ghosh have also faced such protests. Apart from this, there was also an incident of protest by the crowd while taking the arrested TMC leader Soumitra Banerjee to the court.
Similarly, recently there was news of eggs being thrown at former minister Udayan Guha. TMC alleges that BJP supporters may have a role in these incidents. However, BJP has been continuously rejecting these allegations. BJP says that the resentment of the people in the state is regarding the functioning of the TMC government and its effect is visible in the form of such protests.
The matter reached the High Court
After these incidents, TMC leaders have also approached the court. According to media reports, the matter was raised by senior advocate Sirsanya Bandopadhyay before the division bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty. The petition also mentions recent incidents involving Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien, MP Kalyan Banerjee, MP Abhishek Banerjee, MLA Kunal Ghosh and Madan Mitra.
The court was told that the petition had already been filed, but it could not be heard immediately. The senior lawyer has demanded an early hearing from the court in view of the seriousness of the case. Now everyone’s eyes are on the upcoming hearing of the High Court and its decision, because this can decide the future direction of this entire controversy.
