IND vs AFG: Manav Suthar shines in debut test, becomes 10th Indian to take five wickets in the first match
Mullanpur. Left-arm spin bowler Manav Suthar shone in his debut Test match and was successful in completing a five-wicket haul. Suthar achieved this feat on the third day of the only Test match being played against Afghanistan in Mullanpur. Due to the brilliant performance of the bowlers under the leadership of Manav Suthar, India bundled out Afghanistan for 152 runs in the first innings. India declared the first innings at 564 runs for eight wickets. In this way India has got a big lead of 412 runs. India has decided to give follow-on to Afghanistan after which the team came to play in the second innings.
India had a strong batting performance in the first innings. Captain Shubman Gill and KL Rahul had scored centuries from India’s side. Whereas Sai Sudarshan, Rishabh Pant and Washington Sundar had scored half-centuries. Afghanistan team could not all out India and Team India had decided to declare the innings before tea time on the second day. Afghanistan’s first innings collapsed in the first session on the third day. Only Rahmat Shah played an inning of 60 runs for Afghanistan. Other batsmen flopped. Manav Suthar, who was debuting for India, took six wickets. At the same time, Prasidh Krishna got three wickets and Washington Sundar got one wicket.
Manav took six wickets for 33 runs in the first innings against Afghanistan, which is the second best performance by an Indian bowler in the first innings on Test debut. This record is in the name of Narendra Hirwani, who took eight wickets for 61 runs in the first innings of his Test debut against West Indies in 1988. At the same time, in 1967, Abid Ali took six wickets for 55 runs in the first innings of the debut test against Australia and in 1979, Dilip Joshi took six wickets for 103 runs against Australia. Suthar is the 10th Indian to complete a five-wicket haul on Test debut, while he is the seventh Indian spinner to achieve this record in his very first Test.
Young spin all-rounder Manav Suthar caught everyone’s attention with his brilliant performance in his debut Test match against Afghanistan. He bowled very economical and effective spells. At the same time, Manav made a useful contribution in batting and scored 28 runs in 41 balls, which included two fours and two sixes.
