The Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) has confirmed that the India-Afghanistan 1st T20I match will go ahead as per schedule despite the BRICS summit.
The DDCA said it held a meeting with the Delhi Traffic Police and received assurance of all necessary support. There were reports said that Delhi Police had asked for a rescheduling of the 1st match.
“India–Afghanistan 1st T20I on 13 September at Arun Jaitley Stadium will go ahead as scheduled,” Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) posted on X.
“Following a meeting with Delhi Traffic Police, DDCA has been assured of all necessary support and arrangements. No postponement,” it added.
Earlier on September 09, the Delhi Traffic Police had asked the DDCA to reschedule the opening match, citing extensive traffic and security arrangements in place for the BRICS summit over the weekend.
In the letter dated September 09, the DDCA, the DCP Traffic had requested consideration of rescheduling the match.
“Further, the entire Delhi Traffic Police would already be extensively deployed for BRICS-related traffic regulation, diversions, route clearance and VVIP/VIP movements.”
“Simultaneous arrangements for the cricket match would place considerable pressure on available manpower and pose significant challenges in traffic diversion, parking, crowd regulation, emergency access and route clearance,” the letter read.

“In view of the international importance and priority of the BRICS Summit, DDCA is requested to kindly consider rescheduling/postponing the match scheduled on 13.09.2026 to any suitable date after completion of the Summit and related traffic arrangements.”
“This would facilitate effective deployment of resources and ensure smooth and secure movement of foreign delegates, WIPs and the general public,” the letter read.
The Indian cricket team is scheduled to assemble in Delhi in the evening of September 10. They are expected to train over the next couple of days, before the first T20I.
In the meantime, Harshit Rana has been ruled out of the series with Yash Thakur named as his replacement.
“The Men’s Selection Committee has named Yash Thakur as a replacement for Harshit Rana in India’s squads for the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan and the 2026 Asian Games,” the BCCI statement read. All the games will be played at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi.
