Indian compound archers displayed brilliant composure under pressure to complete a golden clean sweep in the team events of the Asian Games as the country's men's, women's and mixed teams won a hat-trick of gold medals to retain their respective titles here on Wednesday. In this brilliant performance, winning the gold medal of the mixed pair of Chikita Taniparthy and Sahil Jadhav was special because with it India also secured the Olympic quota place.
India thus became the first country to qualify for the compound mixed team category of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Compound archery will be included in the Olympic program for the first time at the Los Angeles Games. India's golden campaign in archery started with the women's archery team of Jyoti Surekha Vennam, Chiquita and Prithika Pradeep defeating China 238-234 in the final while the campaign ended with the men's team of Kushal Dalal, Sahil Jadhav and Ganesh Maniratnam Thirumuru. Meanwhile, Chikita and Sahil also won gold in the mixed team. In this way both of them won two gold medals each.
The Indian men's team was behind by two points in the final but made a spectacular comeback in the final stages and registered a thrilling win by defeating China 238-237. China's team included Jiahao Liao, Jinyi Liu and Jingyu Xi. China got the silver medal. In the semi-finals, India defeated the South Korean team of Choi Eun Gyu, Choi Younghee and Kim Jongho 236-229 and made it to the finals.
Pair of Neeru and Kainan won gold in trap mixed team event:
Neeru Dhanda, who won the individual title, along with Kainan Chenai won the gold medal in the mixed team event on Wednesday, completing her historic campaign and becoming the most successful Indian athlete in the ongoing Asian Games here. The 26-year-old shooter had created history a day earlier by becoming the first Indian woman to win an individual shotgun gold medal at the Asian Games. In this way, she completed the brilliant achievement of three medals, which also includes silver in the women's team trap event.
