India Romania Relations: President Murmu’s visit to Romania, agreement reached on increasing trade and defense cooperation

President Droupadi Murmu Romania Visit : In the last leg of President Draupadi Murmu’s three-nation visit, India and Romania have resolved to enhance cooperation in several important areas to give new impetus to their bilateral relations. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, both the countries have set a target of doubling bilateral trade in the next three to five years. Sibi George, Secretary (West), Ministry of External Affairs, told in a special briefing that this is the first state visit of an Indian President to Romania since 1994, which holds historical significance for the relations between the two countries.

In the talks between President Draupadi Murmu and Romanian President Nicosor Dan, topics like trade and investment, defence, renewable energy, digital technology, science and technology, IT, health, education, culture and enhancing people-to-people contacts were discussed in detail. The two countries also agreed to strengthen partnership in areas such as defense production, industrial cooperation, maritime security, cyber security and drone technology. The Ministry of External Affairs says that this visit will provide new strength to India-Romania relations as well as the cooperation between India and the European Union.

India-European Union relations will also benefit

He said that this visit shows how much importance India attaches to its partnership with Romania. This will give new momentum to the relations between the two countries. Along with this, India’s cooperation with the European Union and working together at the multilateral level will also be encouraged. This visit marks the beginning of a new chapter in the relations between India and Romania.

President Draupadi Murmu received state honor

George said that on Thursday evening, President Draupadi Murmu was welcomed by the President of Romania and given state honor at Rashtrapati Bhavan. After this, there was a meeting between the two Presidents with the delegations from both the countries.

Special emphasis on digital and energy sectors

In these meetings, cooperation between the two countries in many areas like trade and investment, defence, renewable energy, digital technology, science and technology, IT, critical minerals, fertilizers, pharmaceutical and healthcare, education, sports, culture and movement of people was reviewed and further plans were discussed.

Common goal of doubling business

George said that both the Presidents expressed confidence that trade between India and Romania is continuously growing and will accelerate further after the India-EU Free Trade Agreement. Both sides agreed to work together to double mutual trade in the next three to five years.

Partnership on drones and cyber security

He said that defense cooperation is emerging as an important area of ​​partnership between the two countries. Both sides welcomed the growing cooperation between their respective defense institutions. This also includes the meeting of the Joint Committee on Defense Cooperation held in May this year. George said that there is a lot of potential to work together in defense production, industrial cooperation, defense technology, maritime security, cyber security and other areas. Many Indian companies are exploring opportunities for joint development and joint production in the defense sector. These include civil and defense aviation as well as new generation drone technology.
