The statue of Goddess Vagdevi is made of white marble. It is said to have been installed and worshipped in Bhojshala. The statue of Goddess Vagdevi is currently in the British Museum in London. Following the Madhya Pradesh High Court’s direction and the state government’s request, the central government has contacted the museum. Union Culture Secretary Vivek Agarwal told the newspaper that following the Madhya Pradesh government’s request, contact has been established through diplomatic and institutional channels to bring back the statue of Goddess Vagdevi. If the statue is brought back from London, it will be considered a major achievement. However, the statue of Goddess Vagdevi is broken and therefore cannot be re-installed.
It should be noted that since the Modi government came to power in 2014, more than 650 ancient artifacts have been brought back from various countries, including Britain, the United States, and Australia. All countries have returned these artifacts as a mark of respect for India’s ancient art. Historically, most ancient Indian artifacts were stolen and looted. Some individuals in those countries first kept them for themselves and then sold them to museums. Thousands of Indian artifacts remain abroad, including the statue of Goddess Saraswati. The people of Dhar have long demanded the return of this statue.
