India Unemployment Rate: Unemployment rate decreased in the country, came to 5.1% in July; Employment situation improved in rural areas

Mumbai There are signs of improvement on the employment front in the country in July 2026. According to data released on Monday by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation, the unemployment rate in the age group of 15 years and above declined to 5.1 percent in July. There has been a decline in this on monthly and yearly basis.

According to the ministry's data, the unemployment rate for both men and women decreased in July as compared to June. A significant improvement was seen in the employment situation in rural areas, while the unemployment rate in urban areas remained almost stable.

Rural unemployment reduced from 5% to 4.5%

The unemployment rate in rural areas decreased from 5 percent in June to 4.5 percent in July 2026. At the same time, the unemployment rate in urban areas increased marginally to 6.7 percent from 6.6 percent in June. The total unemployment rate and rural unemployment rate remained almost stable compared to July 2025. However, the urban unemployment rate improved and came down from 7.2 percent to 6.7 percent.

Labor force participation rate also increased

The total labor force participation rate (LFPR) in the age group 15 years and above increased to 55.4 percent in July, compared to 54.4 percent in June. LFPR in rural areas increased by 1.4 percent to 58 percent compared to June. Whereas in urban areas it increased from 50.1 percent to 50.4 percent.

Big jump in women's participation

Statistics have also revealed improvement in women's labor participation. The LFPR of women aged 15 years and above stood at 34.4 percent in July, which is 1.7 percent higher than 32.7 percent in June. At the same time, the Worker Population Ratio (WPR) of rural women increased from 34.7 percent in June to 37.2 percent in July. The WPR of urban women also increased from 22.7 percent to 23.1 percent.

WPR increased for the first time since February

The total worker population ratio (WPR) increased to 52.5 percent in July. In June 2026 it was 51.4 percent. This is the first time since February 2026 that an increase in WPR has been recorded. In rural areas, the WPR for the age group 15 years and above stood at 55.4 percent in July, while in urban areas it increased marginally to 47 percent.
