As the dust settles from their recent white-ball assignments, Team India is set to host the West Indies in a thrilling home series. The five-match T20I series will see the Men in Blue host the Caribbean side in Lucknow, Ranchi, Indore, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru from October 6 to 17.
The likes of Shreyas Iyer, vice-captain Tilak Varma, Kuldeep Yadav, and Arshdeep Singh were all part of the squad.
Four players in India's squad have not faced the West Indies in the shortest format of the game.
1. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Teenage prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who turned 15 during the West Indies series, is the exciting prospect among India's openers of the future. Suryavanshi, a southpaw, had struggled to find his feet in the early stages of his Test debut in Manchester last year, scoring 14, 13 and 15 in his first three innings, but responded with a stand-out series in Harare, hitting 151 runs in three innings at an average of 50.33 and a strike rate of 196.10, including a towering 50 off 19 balls and an 81. off 49.
Despite his exploits in Zimbabwe, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have stolen a march on the youngster as openers against Afghanistan, and head coach Gautam Gambhir has warned him to be patient if he wants to get a chance. 2. Nitish Kumar Reddy
Nitish Kumar Reddy, the 23-year-old all-rounder, will aim to make his mark in the West Indies as India begins its T20I campaign against the visitors. Sunrisers Hyderabad's man has made steady progress in the shortest format of the game, having recorded 91 runs at a strike rate of 168.51 and scalped nine wickets in seven T20Is.
Reddy comes into the series having shaken up the opposition in the ongoing T20I series against Afghanistan with his seaming deliveries. The left-arm orthodox spinner picked up six wickets in three games, including a fine 3-24 and 3-25, showing that he has the ability to tear through partnerships when required. Coupled with his brilliant 74 off 34 balls in the Delhi game against Bangladesh in October 2024, he will provide a handy balance to the batting line-up as a back-up opener for captain Iyer.
3.Mayank Yadav
Mayank Yadav, the pace spearhead for Lucknow Super Giants, has had a rich haul of wickets in the Indian Premier League, helping him to make his T20I debut against Bangladesh in Gwalior in October 2024. However, a long injury lay-by of two years kept the 24-year-old out of action for most of the last two years.
Yadav will aim to make up for the lost time during his team's tour of Zimbabwe in July, where he picked up five wickets at an excellent economy rate of 6.55, including a 2-18 and 3-29. With a long run ahead, he will look to take his T20I experience to the next level against a new opposition.
4. Prince Yadav
Prince Yadav, another fast bowling star from Lucknow Super Giants, will fancy his chances of making an impression on the West Indies, having made his debut against Ireland in Belfast last June, picking up an eye-catching 3-22. The right-arm quick has added to his tally of scalps in the six T20Is that he has played so far, with nine wickets at an average of 18.77.
Yadav, who has taken four wickets at an excellent economy rate of 5.43 against Zimbabwe, will provide much-needed competition for the slot in the pace bowling attack, alongside Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, and will look to make the most of his opportunities against the West Indies.
The Way Forward
India's upcoming T20I series against the West Indies will feature four exciting young players who are looking to make their mark on the international stage. Whether they make it to the starting XI or not, the management has shown its intent to give chances to the young guns and build depth in the squad.
