- Agreement with Bharat Electronics Limited
- Helping to respond to the threat of drones
- Promotion of indigenous defense production
Indian Army's capability to monitor the movement of small and micro drones along with enemy fighter jets will be strengthened. The Ministry of Defense has signed an agreement worth around Rs 770 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for procurement of advanced light radars. With this radar, it will be possible to detect low-flying air targets and monitor their movements.
The agreement was signed in New Delhi on October 21 in the presence of Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. These radars will have capabilities such as detecting aerial targets, tracking them and prioritizing them according to threat level. These radars are developed to detect targets the size of fighter jets as well as small and miniature drones.
Helping to respond to the threat of drones
The use of unmanned aerial systems is becoming a major challenge in modern warfare. Small drones can be used for surveillance as well as for attacks. In such a situation, with the help of modern radar, it will be easier for the Indian Army to identify air threats in time and prepare defensive actions accordingly.
Another important characteristic of this radar is the prioritization of aerial targets. It can therefore focus on more important threats while simultaneously monitoring multiple targets.

Promotion of indigenous defense production
According to the Ministry of Defence, this agreement is an important step towards the indigenization of air defense systems in the country. The purchase is also considered important towards achieving the goal of a developed India by 2047. The aim of these efforts is to increase the production of modern defense equipment in the country, reduce dependence on foreign technology and build a self-sufficient defense industry that can compete globally.
