Indian Army’s new uniform manual implemented, many rules changed

Indian Army: Indian Army has announced a new scheme for its officers and soldiers. Army Uniform Manual 2026 Has been released. This detailed manual of 174 pages makes several important changes related to the rules of wearing uniform, personal grooming, military discipline and use of uniform in public functions. The Army says these changes are aimed at further strengthening the dignity and discipline of the uniform while maintaining military traditions in line with modern requirements.

New dress guideline for women officers

Under the new guidelines, women officers have been allowed to wear plain colored sarees. Apart from this, kurta-salwar and ankle-length straight pants with dupatta have also been included in the accepted attire. However, dresses like sleeveless kurta, palazzo and cigarette pants are not allowed.

Married women officers may wear sindoor, but it should not be visible while wearing military caps. There is a ban on the use of colored nail polish, lipstick, bindi and nose pin.

Standards also set regarding length of mustache

The Army has also clarified the rules related to grooming of male soldiers and officers. According to the new manual, the maximum length of mustache has been fixed at 12 centimeters. Apart from this, use of deodorant and perfume will not be allowed in the uniform, while after-shave lotion can be used.

Strict instructions on beard, tattoo and hairstyle

Strict provisions regarding personal presentation have also been included in the manual. Growing a beard without approval, adopting unusual hairstyles, having visible tattoos on the body, getting unnecessary body piercings and excessive make-up will be considered against the rules. Besides, wearing visible electronic gadgets along with the uniform has also been controlled.

Rules on wearing uniform in public programs

According to the new guidelines, Army officers and soldiers will not be able to participate in political programs, protests, private parties, wedding ceremonies or any paid media event wearing uniform without permission. The move is aimed at maintaining the dignity of the military uniform and its neutral identity.

Indigenous identity got a boost

Some old provisions related to the colonial era have been removed in the new manual. The indigenous style bandi jacket has been included as formal wear. Along with this, the use of some traditional military symbols and ceremonial equipment has been limited, thereby giving more prominence to the Indian military identity.

According to the Army, uniform is not just a part of clothing but a symbol of military honor, discipline and professional identity. Keeping this thinking in mind, new rules have been prepared. The Army Uniform Manual 2026 defines all aspects in detail, from the manner of wearing the uniform to its use in public life.
