Indian men swap $182,000 diamond with fake stone in Singapore

Serasiya Milan Ramnikbhai, 30, and Mangroliya Manojkumar Kurjibhai, 41, both Indian nationals, were formally charged with “theft” on June 20.

The Singapore Police Force said in a statement that the men are accused of taking the diamond from a staff member at a store on Kreta Ayer Road on June 19.

Preliminary findings suggest the pair posed as customers interested in purchasing the high-value diamond. While inspecting the gem, they allegedly swapped it with a fake stone before leaving the store without making a purchase.

The deception was only discovered shortly after their departure when the store staff conducted a standard verification check on the returned stone.

Police said they were alerted to the crime at approximately 3:40 p.m. on June 19 after the diamond was reported stolen.

Officers quickly identified the suspects through on-the-ground investigations, store CCTV footage, and police camera systems. In a rapid response, authorities managed to track down and arrest both men at Changi Airport Terminal 3 later that same day before they could flee the country.

The stolen diamond was successfully recovered and seized as evidence.

The suspects’ case will be mentioned again in court on June 26.

If convicted of theft in a dwelling, each man faces up to seven years in prison and a potential fine, according to the official police statement.
