0India’s Davis Cup 2026 campaign is over after South Korea won the Qualifiers tie 3-1 in Seoul. Sumit Nagal suffered a straight-sets defeat to Soonwoo Kwon in the fourth rubber on Saturday, losing 6-2, 6-2 in just one hour and eight minutes.
The result ended India’s hopes of reaching the Davis Cup Final 8, with South Korea securing its place in the Final 8 for the first time in Bologna.

Nagal struggled to find his rhythm against Kwon, who was ranked No. 157 compared with the Indian’s No. 247. The Korean controlled the match from the baseline and broke Nagal repeatedly to take the opening set 6-1.
There was little change in the second set as Kwon continued to dictate the rallies and closed out another 6-2 set to complete a comfortable victory.
For Nagal, it was a difficult end to a tie in which he had already suffered a three-set defeat to Hyeon Chung on the opening day.
India Had Chances Before The Tie Slipped Away
India’s defeat was not decided by the final rubber. The team began Day 1 with two opportunities in singles but lost both matches after taking early advantages.
Dhakshineswar Suresh won the opening set against Kwon before the Korean fought back to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Nagal also started strongly against Chung, taking the first set before losing 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.
India could have changed the outcome by converting those early leads into wins. Instead, South Korea entered the second day with a 2-0 advantage and needed only one more victory.
Sriram Balaji-Dhakshineswar Suresh’s Doubles Win Gave India Brief Hope On Day 2
India stayed alive after Sriram Balaji and Dhakshineswar Suresh won the doubles rubber on Saturday, cutting South Korea’s lead to 2-1.
That victory gave India a chance to level the tie through the reverse singles. However, Kwon ended that possibility by beating Nagal in the fourth rubber.
India therefore finished the qualifiers tie with a 1-3 defeat and will not advance to the Davis Cup Final 8. It was India’s first appearance in the qualifiers round 2 since the current format was introduced in 2019. They came to Seoul after a 3-2 win over the Netherlands in February.
Had India completed the comeback in South Korea, it would have reached the Final 8 for the first time since 1996.
