Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya lauded the performances of Indian athletes at the Commonwealth Games 2026, praising the nation for its historic medal haul in boxing and athletics.
Mandaviya commended boxers Sachin Siwach, Ankush Panghal, Arundhati Choudhary, Priya Ghanghas, and Sakshi Chaudhary for winning gold medals, and acknowledged the efforts of silver medallists Lovlina Borgohain and Narender Berwal, as well as bronze medallist Gulveer Singh.
Highlighting the significance of these achievements, Mandaviya stated, “The success reflects the growing strength of Indian sports,” and celebrated Gulveer Singh for securing India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games medals in the men’s 5000m and 10000m events.
In an X post, Mandaviya wrote, “A golden triumph for Indian boxing! Congratulations to TOPS Core athlete Sachin on winning the Gold Medal in the Men’s 60kg event at the Commonwealth Games 2026.” India concluded its boxing campaign in Glasgow with a record-breaking seven gold medals following Narender Berwal’s silver in the men’s 90+kg category, marking the country’s best-ever Commonwealth Games performance. This tally also placed India atop the boxing medal table with seven gold and three silver medals.
In the men’s 60kg final, Sachin staged a remarkable comeback against Namibia’s Tryagain Morning Ndevelo. Despite trailing after the first two rounds, he forced a standing count and clinched a 3-2 split-decision victory in the final round.
Ankush Panghal secured India’s seventh boxing gold by defeating England’s Dimeji Shittu 4-1 in a split decision in the men’s 80kg final. Mandaviya congratulated him, saying, “India’s golden run in Boxing continues! Heartiest congratulations to TOPS athlete Ankush on winning the Gold Medal in the Men’s 80kg event at the Commonwealth Games 2026.”
Arundhati Choudhary dominated the women’s 70kg final, defeating England’s Chantelle Reid 5-0 by unanimous decision. Mandaviya described her victory as “absolute dominance,” adding, “Huge congratulations to TOPS Core athlete Arundhati Choudhary for bringing home Gold in Women’s 70kg Boxing at the Commonwealth Games 2026.”
Priya Ghanghas overcame Canada’s Marie-Bathoul Al-Ahmadieh 4-1 in a split-decision to win gold in the women’s 60kg final. Mandaviya referred to this as a historic achievement, writing, “Indian Boxing continues to script history! Heartiest congratulations to TOPS Core athlete Priya on clinching the Gold Medal in the Women’s 60kg event at the Commonwealth Games 2026.”
Sakshi Chaudhary further enhanced India’s tally with a 5-0 win over England’s Ruby White in the women’s 51kg final. Mandaviya noted, “Unstoppable in the ring! Heartiest congratulations to TOPS athlete Sakshi on winning the Gold Medal in the Women’s 51kg event at the Commonwealth Games 2026. This is India’s third Boxing Gold of the day, reflecting the growing strength of Indian boxing and the impact of the Modi government’s continued investment in nurturing sporting talent.”
Lovlina Borgohain earned a silver medal after losing 1-4 to Australia’s Emma-Sue Greentree in the women’s 75kg final. Mandaviya extended congratulations, stating, “Silver for India in the ring! Heartiest congratulations to TOPS Core athlete Lovlina Borgohain on winning the Silver Medal in the Women’s 75kg Boxing event at the Commonwealth Games.”
In the men’s 90+kg final, Narender Berwal was defeated by England’s Damar Thomas 0-5 in a unanimous decision but secured silver. Mandaviya praised his podium finish as part of a memorable campaign.
In athletics, Gulveer Singh delivered a tactical race to claim bronze in the men’s 5000m, becoming the first Indian to win a medal in that event at the Commonwealth Games. Mandaviya expressed pride, writing, “Gulveer……Gulveer!! Heartiest congratulations to our TOPS athlete Gulveer on his Bronze Medal in the Men’s 5000m. Winning India’s first-ever CWG medals in both the 5000m & 10000m is an extraordinary feat. The entire nation is proud of you!”
Additionally, Mandaviya congratulated Unnati Sharma for winning bronze in the women’s 63kg judo event, acknowledging her contribution to India’s medal tally. He wrote, “Congratulations to Khelo India athlete Unnati Sharma on clinching the Bronze Medal in the Women’s 63kg Judo event at the Commonwealth Games 2026.”
