New Delhi. The world of Artificial Intelligence is changing rapidly and India is also speeding up its preparations to be a part of this change. To increase the capacity of AI in the country, the emphasis is not only on developing new models, but work is also being done on strengthening the computing capacity, semiconductor chips, data infrastructure and technical skills required for it. Through IndiaAI Mission, work is being done to develop resources required for AI, support startups and researchers and promote India-centric AI solutions. Under this mission, emphasis is also being laid on developing shared computing facilities for AI in the country.
Semiconductor chips play an important role in increasing the capability of AI. Semiconductor program has been launched to develop chip manufacturing and its entire ecosystem in India. Under this, a plan has been made to promote semiconductor fab, packaging and Indian designed chips. Many manufacturing projects have been approved under the programme. A large amount of investment is proposed in these and commercial production has also started in some projects. The second phase of the semiconductor sector is also being taken forward with a focus on strengthening the broader ecosystem across sectors such as materials, gas and equipment along with expansion of Indian designed chips, semiconductor fabs and advanced packaging.
Work is also being done on developing indigenous AI capabilities under the IndiaAI Mission. Several teams have been selected to prepare Indian Foundational AI Models and Large Language Models. Emphasis is being laid on developing these models in accordance with Indian languages and local needs. With this, a digital platform has been created to provide access to AI models, development tools and resources related to different fields. Under the shared computing program of the mission, arrangements are also being made to provide high capacity computing facilities to startups, researchers, educational institutions and government organizations.
India's AI preparedness also includes efforts to increase chip design and domestic technological capacity. Schemes are being run to provide facilities and incentives to domestic companies, startups and MSMEs related to semiconductor design. Under this, projects related to chip and system-on-chip design have been approved. Many fabless chip design companies have also been given access to advanced design infrastructure. Some designs have been sent to different fabs for manufacturing and some chips are also ready. Along with this, work is also being done towards increasing AI computing capacity and establishing high-performance AI compute systems.
India's overall preparation focuses on strengthening semiconductor, computing and digital infrastructure together with AI. Efforts are being made to develop technical capacity in the country along with increasing the availability of GPU required for AI. There is a preparation to advance computing, chip manufacturing, chip design, indigenous AI models and their related technical resources through IndiaAI Mission and Semiconductor Program. In this way, India is working on simultaneously developing different technical areas required for AI.
