India’s strength in sea increased manifold, mega deal worth ₹1,250 crore with Seychelles on defense and infrastructure

India Seychelles Security Deal The Government of India has achieved another major diplomatic success, taking its security and economic cooperation in the Indian Ocean region to a new level. A comprehensive ‘Umbrella Line of Credit’ agreement worth Rs 1,250 crore (about $150 million) has been officially signed between India and the strategically important island country Seychelles.

Under this historic agreement, India will provide major financial assistance to Seychelles on very easy terms for timely completion of various major projects related to its infrastructure, defense and socio-economic development. Defense and foreign affairs experts are considering this as a very visionary and important step taken under India’s ‘SAGAR’ (Security and Growth for All in the Region) policy and ‘Neighborhood First’ policy.

After all, what is this ‘Umbrella Line of Credit’ and how will India benefit from it?

In very simple and easy words, ‘Umbrella Line of Credit’ is a financial structure under which Seychelles can use the entire fund as per its wish for important projects in many different sectors like defence, maritime security, health and infrastructure, instead of any one fixed project. This loan or financial assistance will be completely managed and operated through the Export-Import Bank of India (EXIM Bank).

The most important and best condition of this agreement has been kept that Seychelles will import a large part of the goods and services required for all these projects from India. Due to this condition, Indian companies, manufacturers and exporters are also expected to get huge business benefits in the coming time.

Why is this new deal very important for India strategically?

In response to China’s ever-increasing assertiveness in the Indian Ocean, its suspicious interference and its devious ‘String of Pearls’ policy of encircling India from all sides, this step of India is being considered very strategic and accurate. Seychelles is ideally located close to the major international maritime trade routes (Sea Lanes of Communication) of the Indian Ocean.

Strengthening India’s diplomatic influence there will be of great help in completely stopping piracy and international drug trafficking. Anyway, the history of military cooperation between India and Seychelles is decades old and strong. With the help of this new fund, Seychelles’ coastal security and military infrastructure will be further modernized, which will make their coordination with the Indian Navy much better and stronger than before.

India’s digital power will roar in Seychelles also, now UPI will run rampant there too

Along with this mega-deal, a big success has also been achieved on the digital front. Giving major details of this bilateral conversation, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the Central Bank of Seychelles have also signed a very important Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the full implementation of India’s Unified Payment Interface (UPI) in Seychelles. After this, it will be very easy for Indian tourists going there to make payment.

Along with this, both the countries have also signed a strong Extradition Treaty to deal strictly with international and cyber crimes and an MoU for cooperation in the exploration of outer space for peaceful purposes. The special thing is that on this occasion Seychelles has sought special help from India for setting up a state-of-the-art AI and cyber security center as well as an ‘Advanced Light Helicopter’ – to which Prime Minister Narendra Modi immediately gave a positive signal and said that New Delhi will consider this request very soon and seriously.

A new golden chapter begins in the bilateral relations between India and Seychelles

Trade, diplomatic and cultural relations between India and Seychelles have always been very deep and friendly. But after this new comprehensive financial agreement of Rs 12.5 billion, a new golden chapter is going to start in the mutual relations between the two countries in the areas of trade, maritime security grid and connectivity. International defense experts clearly believe that this unbreakable partnership will prove to be a major milestone in the times to come in maintaining peace, security and stability in the entire Indian Ocean region.
