New Delhi : To the general public inflationis getting hit again. Both Basmati and common non-Basmati rice prices have increased significantly. In the first quarter of the financial year 2026-27, Basmati rice prices have increased by 15 to 20 percent compared to last year, while prices of non-basmati varieties of daily consumption have increased by 20 to 25 percent.
Traders and exporters say prices are likely to remain high until the new crop hits the market in October-November. This price hike is due to both domestic and international factors. Stressed by global demand and the US-Iran war, many countries are rapidly buying rice to secure their food supplies. There is a huge demand for Indian rice, especially in the Gulf countries. Low rainfall has affected production and supply in major rice producing states like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana.

Low stock balance before new arrivals
According to Akshay Gupta, head of bulk rice exports at KRBL Ltd, India exported a record 6.52 crore tonnes of basmati rice to 154 countries in the 2025-26 financial year, with Saudi Arabia being the largest buyer. Disruptions in payments and shipping in the Gulf corridor have slowed supply, but demand remains strong. The 2025 crop sold out early and very little stock remains before new arrivals in October. This means that exports are not the main cause of rising domestic prices.
