Netflix 1000 Job Cuts: The worldwide popular streaming platform Netflix (Netflix) has sparked debate in the entertainment industry following reports of massive layoffs. According to a report by *The Wall Street Journal*, the company may cut the jobs of around 1,000 employees. This number is about 6 percent of the company’s global workforce. If the decision goes through, it could be the biggest round of layoffs at Netflix since 2022.
According to the report, company co-chief executives Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos emailed employees Wednesday morning to inform them of the decision. The news comes days before the company announces its third quarter financial results.
Potential impact on product and technology divisions
The biggest impact of layoffs has been expressed in product, technology, legal and human resources departments. By the end of 2025, Netflix employed approximately 16,000 full-time employees. The company now wants to invest more in those areas, from which good financial returns can be obtained. For this, more careful decisions are being taken regarding the number of employees and the use of money, the report said.
Subscriber numbers large, yet growth challenged
Netflix has approximately 32.5 crore paid subscribers. However, it is now necessary for the company to focus on retaining existing viewers on the platform for longer than just acquiring new customers.
According to figures from data analytics company Antenna, Netflix’s subscription cancellation rate in the US is just over 2 percent. On the other hand, in the first half of 2026, hours watched worldwide on the platform increased by around 2 percent to reach 97 billion hours. According to Nielsen figures in the US, Netflix accounted for 7.8 percent of total TV viewing time during July, while YouTube accounted for 14.2 percent.
Changes to new projects including gaming
To attract viewers, Netflix is moving towards new options like video podcasts, shows from YouTube creators, live sports and live channels. The company has also invested in gaming and other entertainment sectors, but some projects are being shelved. Reportedly, Night School Studio was shut down in August, and Helsinki-based Moonloot Gaming Studio is also slated to close. Greg Lombardo, associated with Netflix House, is also leaving the company after seven years. In addition, Warner Bros. Netflix’s attempt to buy Discovery’s studio and streaming business was also unsuccessful.

These results will provide more clarity on the company’s revenue, expenses and future growth. Investors will also want to know how the company is keeping viewers engaged for longer by cutting costs and investing in new types of content.
