Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the five-time winners of the Indian Premier Super League (Ipl 2027), turned the tables on Monday. The CSK management has announced former India left-arm fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their new head coach in place of Stephen Fleming, who has been with them for the past 18 seasons.
For the third time in a row, 'Thalaiva' Mahendra Singh Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings team failed to reach the playoffs in the IPL. This forced Fleming to leave his post. CSK released a press release on Monday, containing Zaheer Khan's statement. It is an honor for me to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of IPL, says Zaheer.
As a cricketer I have enjoyed facing CSK on the field. The atmosphere created by superfans in Chepak is very special. “I look forward to working with this prestigious franchise with a great history,” he said.
Outstanding bowling performance in IPL
In his illustrious 14-year international career, Zaheer Khan took 311 wickets in 92 Tests for India, while in 200 ODIs he amassed a total of 282 wickets. The veteran bowler has taken 17 wickets in 17 T20Is for India.
His performance in the IPL has also been outstanding. He has taken 102 wickets in 100 matches in his IPL career playing for three different teams (Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals).

Great training experience for Zaheer
Zaheer, who was instrumental in helping India win the ODI World Cup 2011, brings his tactical planning and coaching experience to the Chennai Super Kings side. He has been the Director of Cricket Operations and Head of Global Development at Mumbai Indians before playing a mentor role with Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2025.
Zaheer also conducted a fast bowling camp for India 'A', U-19 and select players at the BCCI Center of Excellence (CEO) in Bangalore earlier this year. Zaheer has been selected after Fleming left CSK and after discussions with several candidates.
It is said that former Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni had insisted that the head coach should be an Indian considering the Indian situation and the understanding of the local players.
