The company claims that by 2027, humanoid robots will be able to understand instructions given in normal language. After this, humans will be able to talk to the robot in the same way as they do with any other human being.
ChatGPT like change will come in robotics
Gao Yang, co-founder and chief scientist of Spirit AI, has given information about this plan. According to him, the company hopes that robots can reach levels like GPT-3.0 in the first six months of 2027. This would mean that humans would be able to give instructions to robots in normal language. Robots will try to perform different physical tasks by understanding those instructions.
However, the company has also clarified that this does not mean that robots will start doing all the household work from 2027. The environment of home is much more complex than that of a factory. Different situations can arise at home every day. In such a situation, household work still remains a big challenge for robots.
Robots are being trained with human data
Spirit AI is gathering real-world data to train robots. For this, about 1,000 contract employees work in different ways. These people do many daily tasks in homes and factories. Sensors are placed on their bodies. The data received from these sensors is used in the training of robots.
People can be seen doing various household chores at a training center of Spirit AI in Beijing. These include opening the fridge door, unlocking the door lock and cutting vegetables with a knife. Through these activities, robots are taught how to work like humans. According to the company, its robots can perform small tasks with about 90 percent success in some controlled environments.
Robots reaching commercial use from factory
Spirit AI currently has more than 12 Moz1 wheeled humanoid robot units. They are being made to work on the production lines of battery company CATL and retail company JD.com. The company was started in 2024. According to Spirit AI, it has so far raised funding of more than $670 million. About 300 employees work in the company. Its valuation is said to be around $2.9 billion.
Small household chores are the biggest challenge
It is not easy for robots to do small household tasks for humans. A job like cutting vegetables involves a lot of precise movements. The problem increases when the robot is faced with a task that it has not seen before.
For this reason, Spirit AI is relying more on real-world data. Other companies also use computer simulation to train robots. This can reduce the cost of training. Spirit AI believes that to learn certain tasks, it is necessary for the robot to connect with real-world data.
Safety of robots among humans is also important
As robots work among humans, security will also become a big issue. According to Spirit AI, its robot has technology to control the force of the entire body. If the robot starts applying excessive force in any situation, the system can apply emergency brakes.
Currently, the goal of Spirit AI is to make robots more intelligent and useful. If the company's plan is successful, it could change the way humans and robots interact. However, many technical challenges still remain in creating a fully capable robot for household tasks.
