He said that social media has given the common people the opportunity to express their views and make their voice reach the world, but some people have started using this freedom to insult and hurt others.
The actress said that people in public life are often advised to remain silent saying that criticism and trolling is part of their sphere. However, he raised the question as to why someone's presence in public life should mean that his or her right to respect should be taken away.
Smriti Irani appealed to social media users to express their disagreement, ask questions, debate and also criticize people associated with public life, but while doing so, they should not forget decorum and responsibility. He said that there is a human being present on the other side of the screen, who has feelings.
He also said in his post that a comment made by hiding behind an account or saying 'my handle, my opinion' does not give anyone the right to behave abusively. According to him, responsibility is also associated with freedom of speech.
Smriti Irani said that it may take just a few seconds to write a comment or message, but the impact of her words can last for a long time. He appealed to people to be sensitive and kind to others on social media.
