Let us tell you that there was a time when Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) were called ‘Chokers’. The team had to wait for 17 years to win its first IPL title. But now the story has changed. Royal Challengers Bangalore has won the second consecutive trophy. Narendra Modi Stadium, the world’s largest cricket ground, witnessed this historic moment when on the night of May 31, RCB defeated Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2026 final to win the trophy for the second consecutive time and became only the third team to defend its title. Before this, only Chennai Super Kings (2010 and 2011) and Mumbai Indians (2019-2020) have been able to do this.

Virat hits his fastest fifty of IPL

Virat Kohli was the biggest character in this golden story of red jersey Royal Challengers Bangalore. In response to the target of 156 runs in the final, Virat Kohli alone scored 75 (45) runs. He also scored the fastest half-century in his IPL history in 25 balls. Wickets were falling from one end, but King understood the responsibility and promised himself that he would remain at the crease till the last moment. He would die only after finishing the match and did the same.

The more this player is praised, the less it is. After remaining unsold in the auction, he was signed by RCB management as an injury replacement three years ago. Patidar’s journey from there to becoming captain is amazing. Under his captaincy in 2025, this young player had made RCB the champion for the first time and now after winning the second consecutive title, he has entered the club of great captains like Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. Before Patidar, only Dhoni and Rohit have been able to make their team defend the IPL trophy.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar took 28 wickets in 16 matches

Experienced Bhuvneshwar Kumar also proved that there is no replacement for experience. He not only took two wickets for 29 runs in the final but also emerged as RCB’s biggest match winner in the entire tournament. Bhuvi took a total of 28 wickets in 16 matches this season at an economical economy of 7.94 and missed out on grabbing the Purple Cap by a very close margin. Bhuvi also got good support from Josh Hazlewood. The Australian pacer took 15 wickets in 13 matches.

Gujarat Titans faltered badly in the final

Captain Shubman Gill had said that he too would have batted first after winning the toss, hence there was no regret in losing the toss, but RCB bowlers took full advantage of the slow pitch and allowed Gujarat to score only 155 runs for eight wickets. For RCB, Rasikh Salam took three wickets while Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood took two wickets each. Krunal Pandya took one wicket for 23 runs.

Gujarat was able to hit its first six in the 13th over.

It was not at all easy to play shots on the pitch of Narendra Modi Stadium which was a mixture of red and black soil, which was clearly visible in the batting of Gujarat Titans, due to which Gujarat had to wait till the 13th over to hit the first six of their innings, which was hit by Arshad Khan (15 runs) over mid-wicket off Krunal’s ball. The dominance of RCB bowlers can be gauged from the fact that the home team’s innings included only three sixes (two from Arshad and one six from Rashid Khan).
