Xi Jinping is expected to visit India on September 12-13 to attend the BRICS summit in New Delhi. This will be a significant milestone in the gradual normalization of India-China relations after years of military standoff following tensions on the Ladakh border. Xi Jinping’s last visit to India was in October 2019, just months before military clashes along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) that completely transformed relations between the two countries. According to sources, diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Beijing is expected to increase ahead of Xi’s proposed visit. A meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) is also expected in the coming weeks, followed by talks between the Special Representatives of the two countries on the border dispute. This will be the first such meeting since India and China reached an agreement to advance negotiations on the long-standing border dispute.

If Xi Jinping attends, his presence at the BRICS summit will carry significance far beyond the group itself. This will be his first visit to India in nearly six years, and his first since the Galwan Valley clash in June 2020. All eyes will be on whether a bilateral meeting between Indian and Chinese leaders takes place during the summit.
