Christchurch, Oct 24:
India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has been ruled out of Saturday’s second T20 International against New Zealand after sustaining a right adductor strain during the opening match of the five-game series, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Friday.
Kishan sustained the injury during India’s four-wicket victory in the first T20I on Thursday. The BCCI described the injury as a low-grade strain and said its medical team was monitoring his progress. The board did not specify how long the 28-year-old would need to recover.
Kishan did not make a significant contribution with the bat in the series opener but remains an important option in India’s batting line-up. His absence leaves the team management to consider alternatives for the second match as India look to extend their lead in the series.
The injury could open the door for 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to make his entry into the playing XI. Sooryavanshi recently represented India at the Asian Games, scoring 15 in the semi-final against Sri Lanka and 38 in the final against Pakistan. Captain Shreyas Iyer had earlier indicated that the youngster would be given opportunities at the appropriate time.
