Israel attacks just hours after ceasefire, 5 killed in Lebanon
Desk: Just hours after the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah came into effect, attacks started again in southern Lebanon. According to Lebanese government media, 5 people died in Israeli air and drone attacks on Saturday.
Lebanon’s government news agency NNA said that Israeli fighter planes and drones attacked several places in the Nabatiyeh area overnight and till Saturday morning. Many houses and residential buildings were destroyed in these attacks. Apart from this, the Israeli army also opened fire with cannons in Nabatiyeh and surrounding areas before dawn.
This attack took place at a time when a ceasefire was agreed between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah on Friday. According to a US official, this ceasefire came into effect from 4 pm (GMT 1300) on Friday. This agreement was also confirmed by a senior Israeli official and two Hezbollah sources.
Before the ceasefire, violence had intensified in southern Lebanon. Four Israeli soldiers were killed in one attack, while many people in Lebanon were also injured and killed. In view of the increasing tension, both sides agreed to a ceasefire.
A major reason for this is that Israel has not withdrawn its army from its security zone (buffer zone) created in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah says that as long as Israeli soldiers are present there, the cause of conflict will remain. Despite the implementation of the ceasefire, mistrust remains between the two sides.
