‘I am sad that…’, what did the mother of the player because of whom India lost the match say? Every Indian became emotional

IND VS IRE: India may have lost to Ireland by 34 runs in the first T20 in Belfast, but the biggest highlight for many in Rajasthan was the dream debut of Tonk-born left-arm pacer Jai Mundhra, whose brilliant spell helped Ireland register its first international win over India. Making his international debut on Friday, the 29-year-old made his mark in style by dismissing Sanju Samson on the very first ball of his spell. Later he also took the wicket of Shivam Dubey and took 2 wickets for 25 runs in his four overs.

Jai’s family watched the match together

Back home in Tonk, Jai’s family watched the match together and celebrated. Although they were celebrating every boundary and six of the Indian batsmen, whenever Jai hit the ball, they could not stop their joy. They were proud of this spectacular success, although the family admitted that they were sad that India lost.

I am sad that India lost – Jai Mundra’s mother

Jai Mundra’s mother Vidya Mundra told ANI, “I am sad that India lost, but my son performed very well and made his family, Rajasthan and the country proud. I am proud of him. He took two wickets. Whoever saw him playing used to tell us to make him a cricketer. After class 10, he focused more on his studies because his father wanted him to get a degree first and then focus on that. He completed his studies.” And then he focused on this and joined an academy.

I cannot express my happiness in words – Uncle Kanhaiya Lal

His uncle Kanhaiya Lal Mundra was equally emotional after seeing the memorable debut. He said, “I cannot express my happiness in words. The passion with which my son played, he made history. I have been getting a lot of phone calls saying that he played very well. We are sad that India lost, but we are proud of our son.”

Cricket journey started from Tonk

Jai’s cricket journey started from Tonk, where he trained under coach Imtiaz Ali on the same ground where India’s paceman Khalil Ahmed was also groomed. Before moving to Ireland to pursue an M Tech degree in May 2021, he represented Tonk and Rajasthan at the under-14 level.

While studying, Jay continued playing cricket, initially representing the famous Leinster Cricket Club in Dublin. He was part of the team that won the Irish Senior Cup in 2023 and gradually established himself with his aggressive left-arm fast bowling and easy batting. After getting Irish citizenship in 2025, he made it to the national team.

Jai did a great performance

On Friday, Jai made an immediate impact as he came into the attack in the second over of India’s innings. He dismissed Sanju Samson on the very first ball of his spell and gave only seven runs in the over. Relying on his captain’s confidence in the fifth over, he conceded just four runs. He did wonders again in the 16th over when he dismissed Shivam Dubey on the last ball, completing a sharp return catch on his own ball after conceding six runs in the over.

Jai was almost about to take the third wicket in his last over, but Harshit Rana missed the catch on the last ball. In the end he took 2 wickets for 25 runs, and played an important role in Ireland’s historic victory. Ireland will face India in the second T20I in Belfast on Sunday and will look to win the series.
