Big upheaval in telecom sector, Airtel beats Jio in the race for new customers
New Delhi. A major upheaval has been seen in India’s telecom market. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released new figures for April 2026. These figures have surprised even industry experts. According to this, the giant company Reliance Jio has suffered a major setback. However, the number of mobile phone users in the country is increasing rapidly.

The total number of mobile subscribers jumped from 1,265.73 million to 1,271.90 million in the month of April. Along with this, the mobile tele-density of the country has also increased from 89.88% to now beyond 90.28%.
Airtel number one in the race for new customers
Bharti Airtel has benefited the most from this increasing crowd. Airtel has left Jio behind in terms of adding new mobile customers. Let’s take a look at which companies added how many new customers:
Bharti Airtel: Holding the first position, it added an impressive 31.39 lakh new customers.
Read :- Data center market: Due to rapidly increasing AI, demand for data centers has increased in India, these companies are taking maximum benefits.
Reliance Jio: Slipped to second position and created 29.42 lakh new users.
BSNL: The government company also added 76,175 new users to its network.
Vodafone Idea (Vi) : 53,257 new customers came to his account.
However, amidst all this, the performance of another government company MTNL was disappointing. There was a decline in the number of their customers.
Jio still dominates in broadband
If we talk about total network (both wireline and wireless) instead of just mobile, Airtel is ahead here also. Airtel added a total of 34.82 lakh new customers. At the same time, the total net addition of Jio was 30.84 lakh. But, when it comes to broadband (Internet), Reliance Jio is still the uncrowned king.
Live: At the forefront with 51.2 crore broadband customers.
Airtel: At second place with 36.21 crore users.
Vodafone Idea: 12.89 crore customers.
BSNL: 2.26 crore broadband users.
One-sided rule of private companies
This report of TRAI reveals another truth. The country’s telecom market is now completely captured by private companies. The total market share of private companies like Airtel, Jio and Vi has reached 92.67%. At the same time, government companies like BSNL and MTNL now have only 7.33% stake left.
How did Airtel achieve great growth?
Now the question arises that how did Airtel defeat Jio? According to market experts, Airtel is continuously improving its network quality. Their 4G and 5G services are now much better than before. Apart from this, the company has kept its entire focus on premium customers. This is the reason why Airtel has been continuously giving tough competition to Jio for the last few months and now it has worn the crown of number one in adding new customers.
