India’s Streaming Giant Takes Its First Major International Step
JioHotstar has officially expanded beyond India, launching its streaming service in the United Kingdom, Canada and Singapore on September 2. The move marks a major international push for JioStar as it seeks to turn its Indian entertainment platform into a global streaming brand.
The service replaces the existing Hotstar offering in these three markets, giving international viewers access to a much larger catalogue of Indian entertainment across multiple languages.
More Than 1.6 Lakh Hours of Content
JioHotstar is launching internationally with more than 160,000 hours of content covering films, television shows, regional programming, reality entertainment, children’s content and other genres.
The catalogue spans more than 12 Asian languages and comes with personalised recommendations, an upgraded interface and subtitles and dubbing designed to make Indian-language programming accessible to a wider audience.
The company also plans to add approximately 30,000 hours of fresh content every yearincluding original programmes, television franchises and new film releases.
Targeting the Global South Asian Audience
The expansion is primarily aimed at the large South Asian diaspora in the UK, Canada and Singapore. However, JioStar is positioning the service as more than a platform for Indians living abroad.
The company wants audiences from other backgrounds to discover Indian stories, regional languages and entertainment. This gives JioHotstar an opportunity to compete for viewers interested in international and multicultural content.
The strategy effectively treats Indian entertainment as a global product rather than something designed exclusively for the domestic market.
Bigg Boss Gets Interactive
One of the platform’s major international features will be live interaction with the Bigg Boss franchise.
Viewers in the three markets will be able to vote for contestants across six language editions. In the UK and Canada, audiences will also receive access to a 24-hour live feed, while Canadian subscribers can watch Bigg Boss Hindi seven days before its television broadcast.
JioHotstar is also introducing a “Before TV” feature, giving international viewers early access to selected programmes from channels such as Star Plus, Colors, Star Vijay, Asianet, Star Jalsha and Star Pravah.
From Indian Platform to Global Entertainment Brand
The international launch represents an important shift for JioStar. Rather than simply exporting an Indian streaming service, the company is attempting to build a platform around a global audience with a strong connection to South Asian entertainment.
Its first three international markets also provide a relatively focused test of the strategy. The UK, Canada and Singapore have sizeable South Asian communities and established demand for Indian films, television and regional-language programming.
The bigger challenge will be converting that existing interest into long-term subscriptions and attracting viewers beyond the diaspora.
If successful, JioHotstar could give Indian entertainment a significantly larger global distribution platform and establish JioStar as a more serious international streaming player.
Summary
JioHotstar has launched in the UK, Canada and Singapore, replacing the existing Hotstar service in these markets. The platform offers more than 160,000 hours of entertainment across 12-plus Asian languages and plans to add around 30,000 hours annually. With interactive Bigg Boss features, early television access and a focus on the global South Asian audience, JioStar is attempting to transform JioHotstar from an Indian streaming service into a global entertainment platform.
