Police in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district have registered a case against BJP Kisan Morcha leader Aijaz Ahmad Shah for alleged cheating and criminal intimidation, officials said on Wednesday.
The FIR was registered at Tral police station under Sections 420 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), relating to cheating and criminal intimidation, respectively.
Officials said the alleged offense dates back to 2022 and, therefore, the case has been registered under the IPC. The law was replaced by the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in July 2024.
According to the complaint, Shah allegedly took money from the complainant on the assurance that he would help him through the police in a particular matter.
Shah was appointed vice-president of the Pulwama Kisan Morcha in November last year. Officials said this is the third case registered against him this year and the eighth similar case against him since 2016 across at least four police stations in the district.
The latest development comes days after police registered an FIR against BJP Pulwama district president Showkat Gayoor on August 11 over alleged extortion and threats. The BJP subsequently suspended Gayoor from all party positions pending disciplinary proceedings.
BJP leader Altaf Thakur, who also belongs to the Tral area, declined to comment on the latest case against Shah.
Police in the past have also registered cases against political leaders and activists over allegations of extortion and cheating, including cases involving promises of government jobs or assistance from police and other government officials.
Officials have said that in several such cases, accused persons allegedly misused their political affiliations to make false promises and extract money.
During the peak years of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, activists associated with different political parties were also accused in some cases of allegedly demanding money from families of youths detained by security forces for questioning in terror-related investigations.
The allegations against Shah are subject to investigation, and the registration of an FIR does not by itself establish guilt.
