The Jammu and Kashmir Police head constable was martyred after terrorists opened fire on security forces during a cordon and search operation in the Lal Chowk area of the Anantnag district on Tuesday.
According to reports, the search operation was launched in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists in the area.
Acting on the information, teams of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Special Operations Group (SOG), and other security forces reached the locality and launched a cordon and search operation.
During the operation, the terrorists, who were hiding in the area, opened indiscriminate fire on the security personnel, triggering a brief exchange of gunfire.
During the initial exchange of fire, police constable Ashiq Hussain sustained critical injuries and was martyred in the line of duty, officials said.
Initial reports said that 35-year-old Ashiq Hussain had been deployed in Anantnag in connection with the ongoing Amarnath Yatra.
The firing took place around 12.30 pm at Lal Chowk in Anantnag, the officials said. The police party which was attacked was deployed for Amarnath Yatra security duty.
It has been observed that certain media organizations and members of the public are circulating photographs and videos related to the terror incident in Anantnag.

The operation was still underway when this report was filed, with additional reinforcements rushed to the area to strengthen the cordon and prevent the terrorists from escaping.
Senior security officials are closely monitoring the situation, while the entire area has been placed under a tight security cordon. A thorough search operation is continuing.
Police said a detailed statement would be issued after the conclusion of the operation. Further details are awaited.
Unconfirmed reports said that the proscribed terror outfit The Resistance Front (TRF) had claimed responsibility for the Anantnag attack. The TRF is considered an offshoot of the Pakistan-based banned terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Senior police officers rushed to the spot, and the entire area was sealed by plugging all possible escape routes to track down the terrorists involved in the attack.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha spoke with Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Parbhat and enquired about the whole incident.
“I spoke with DGP Shri Nalin Prabhat to review the situation following the terror attack in Anantnag. My heartfelt condolences to the family of Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi, who sacrificed his life in the line of duty. The whole country stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the family of the martyr. I strongly condemn this cowardly attack. This heinous act will not go unpunished. J&K Police and our security forces are on the ground and will bring those responsible to justice,” the LG posted on his social media handle.
